The Child Ballads are 305 traditional ballads from England and Scotland, and their American variants, anthologized by Francis James Child during the second half of the 19th century. Their lyrics and Child's studies of them were published as The English and Scottish Popular Ballads. The tunes of most of the ballads were collected and published by Bertrand Harris Bronson in and around the 1960s.

Child Ballads is a studio album by American singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and musician Jefferson Hamer, released on February 11, 2013, by Wilderland Records. It serves as Mitchell's sixth studio album and Hamer's second. The album is composed of old folk ballads from the collection of the same name by Francis James Child re-arranged by the duo. They recorded the album with producer Gary Paczosa in early 2012.

Harvard Scholar Francis James Child collected early ballads from manuscript sources, and attempted to identify the earliest versions. His collection and documentation's final form was published as The English and Scottish Popular Ballads. Ballads as sung in North America, while preserving many qualities of the songs as they were sung in Britain and Ireland, also introduced changes through the process of transmission from one singer to another. In some cases the British ballads were made more American as the singers recalled them. A two page song sheet with the lyrics of several songs includes a related ballad from the British point of view on the American Revolution titled "General Gage. Instead of boasting victory, this song laments defeat, but in other ways the song parallels "Britania's Disgrace.

Traditional folk songs generally come from a culture that no longer exists, but they are still interesting. They allow us to glimpse a time that has passed but that may still influence us. The traditional songs that I've chosen for this article are four of my personal favourites. The definition of "folk song" is somewhat nebulous. It's generally agreed that it's one enjoyed and sung by the common people, or the folk, that live in a particular area. Folk songs of the past were generally transmitted orally  . I still recall some of the folk songs I was taught as a child. They are usually clever in some respect and that's probably why they've stuck in my own memory for so long.

The traditional and folk music here is categorised into various sections such as: Bluegrass, Old-time(Oldtimey), Old Country music, Carter Family, Cowboy songs, Jazz, Blues, Christian music - Country Gospel, Worship, Old-time Hymns, Spirituals, Christmas Music, Celtic - Irish & Scottish, Ballads, Blues, Session Tunes, Children's Songs etc. Tablature for Guitar & mandolin, Singing lessons, Song writing, Chord Charts for piano, guitar, mandolin & banjo. Downloadable PDF scores to print sheet music and MIDI backing tracks for many of the songs.
