Release Date: February 5, 2002. In 2001, Rainer Maria released its third album and played almost 200 shows. Yet, somehow Kaia Fischer (guitar, vocals) and Caithlin De Marrais (vocals, bass) managed to travel from New York back to Madison, Wisconsin a few times over the course of six months to make Open Ground - an album of material mostly written by Kaia outside of sessions with Rainer Maria. Although the project uses the moniker of "Kaia Fischer," Kaia enlisted the help of Caithlin as well as Mike Kinsella (Owen, American Football, Joan of Arc) on nearly the entire record.

Kaia Fischer is one of the driving forces behind alternative rockers Rainer Maria. After releasing several albums with that band throughout the late '90s and the beginning of the next century, Fischer struck out on her own with her first solo album, 2001's Open Ground. Appears On. A side project helmed and titled under Rainer Maria guitarist Kyle Fischer, Open Ground also boasts the collaborative talents of bassist/vocalist Caithlin DeMarrais, drummer Mike Kinsella, cellist Matt Turner, and producer Mark Haines. Though his singing often veers off-key, Fischer's literary visions of romance and self-doubt are well-served by the spirited performances and stellar musicianship.
