The Velvet Underground was an American rock band formed in 1964 in New York City by singer/guitarist Lou Reed, t John Cale, guitarist Sterling Morrison, and drummer Angus MacLise (replaced by Moe Tucker in 1965). The band was initially active between 1965 and 1973, and was briefly managed by the pop artist Andy Warhol, serving as the house band at the Factory and Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable events from 1966 to 1967.
In many ways, The Velvet Underground and Nico was the first rock album that truly seemed to invite the designation alternative. Now billed as the Velvet Underground with Nico, Warhol incorporated the band into a series of multimedia performances dubbed the Exploding Plastic Inevitable: a marriage of underground music, film, dance and lights.
Acclaimed as the 13th best album ever by Rolling Stone, The Velvet Underground And Nico showed the darker side of the counterculture. With songs like Heroin, European Son, and Femme Fatale, it's easy to see why it is described as the best American album of the 60s. To quote Brian Eno, "It (the album) only sold 30,000 copies, but everyone who bought it started a band.
