Central to the secret rhythms concept is Liebezeit’s radical drum code in unison with Friedman’s range of archaic metal percussion and synth instruments.

Jaki Liebezeit (born Hans Liebezeit; 26 May 1938 – 22 January 2017) was a German drummer, best known as a founding member of experimental rock band Can. He was called "one of the few drummers to convincingly meld the funky and the cerebral". In later years, he worked with Burnt Friedman on the Secret Rhythms albums and with Schiller on the Atemlos album. He also worked on the Cyclopean EP, released on 11 February 2013 on 12" and download for Mute Records. Cyclopean was a project that involved, other than Liebezeit, Irmin Schmidt from Can alongside long time collaborators Jono Podmore (Kumo, Metamono) and musician and producer Burnt Friedman. from Faust an album called Flut released 18 July 2014. In 2013 he recorded the album The Obscure Department with British singer-songwriter Robert Coyne.

Secret Rhythms, Vol. 2. (CD - Nonplace. As the title indicates, it's the second full collaboration between the two performers, or at least the second in the series, following on the first from 2002. Working with a number of other guests, most notably Burnt Friedman's Nine Horses bandmate David Sylvian, the duo create eight tracks which are enjoyable if not always immediately stunning. But the subtlety is actually Secret Rhythms, Vol. 2's strength - coming here for the second coming of, say, "Halleluwah" is missing the point.

Former Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit, however, represents the rarer scenario; after recording some free-leaning jazz dates in mid-1960s Germany, he grew tired of the music's lack of form and went on to join Can, with whom he created some of the most forward-thinking rock music of the entire 1970s. Liebezeit's worldview hasn't changed much in the ensuing years, if Secret Rhythms 2, a co-led collaboration with electronic artist Burnt Friedman, is any indication. And even though the entire album is laced with rhythms and production techniques indebted to dub, "Fearer" takes the influence a bit too literally with downtempo strains that could pass as Massive Attack until Chisholm introduces his clarinet line halfway through. On an otherwise instrumental record, one significant departure is "The Librarian", which features guest vocals by David Sylvian.
