The Betty Carter Album is a 1976 album by Betty Carter. It is unique among her albums in its use of overdubbing on some tracks to allow her to record multiple vocal lines. It was also her first album for which she wrote the majority of the songs herself. The album was originally released on Carter's own Bet-Car label. It was first reissued on CD by Verve in 1988. You're a Sweetheart" (Harold Adamson, Jimmy McHugh) – 3:57. I Can't Help It" (Betty Carter) – 2:45. What is It?" (Carter) – 5:35.

Originally put out by singer Betty Carter on her Bet-Car label, this set from her struggling years has since been reissued on CD by Verve. Joined by either Daniel Mixon or Onaje Alan Gumbs on piano, bassist Buster Wiliams and Louis Hayes or Chip Lyles on drums, Betty Carter really digs into the material (the majority of which are her originals), using unusual tempoes (and sometimes quick changes) and coming up with rather spontaneous and sometimes abstract interpretations; "You're a Sweetheart" (which has remained in Carter's.

Carter's vocal world has been one of ferocious scat and luxuriously slow ballads, of relentless swing and angular melodic lines unafraid to dip into dissonance. Carter has been touring with Mark Shim on tenor, and he appears here along with Andre Hayward, trombone, on all the tunes. Some illustrious alumni of the Carter band include pianists Mulgrew Miller, Benny Green, Stephen Scott, Cyrus Chestnut and Jacky Terrasson, bassists Michael Bowie and Ira Coleman, and drummers Washington, Nash, Wynard Harper and Clarence Penn. In other words, she has an eye for talent, and Shim and Hayward are no exception to her rigorous recruiting standards.

Great example of what Betty was up to in the mid- Seventies, produced on Betty's own small and pioneering label ( she was the first woman to create her own label), Bet-Car, which she created when she could not land a major label deal. The woman was an unstoppable force of nature, and this shows on her performances here as well, backed by a great trio consisting of Daniel Mixon or Onaje Alan Gumbs, piano, Buster Williams, bass, Louis Hayes or Chip Lyles, drums.
