When it became clear in the late '90s that no more records were forthcoming from either Seefeel or their break-away project Scala, the sense of unfinished business became palpable. Seefeel had been on an upward trajectory during the mid-'90s, releasing the breath-taking More Like Space EP and signing to Warp for the equally ambitious Starethrough EP. Both records reconciled My Bloody Valentine's experimental haze with the growing field of electronic listening music (which touched on ambient as well as techno).

Conceived by Mark Clifford and Sarah Peacock, Seefeel immediately amalgamated electronics in ways most of their peers in traditional bands would never dream of, these sounds fused deeply with guitar, drums and bass into urgent melodic waves that on early releases like Quique and Succour oscillated between hopefulness, introspection and downright menace.
Seefeel are a British post-rock band formed in the early 1990s by Mark Clifford (guitar, sequencing), Daren Seymour (bass), Justin Fletcher (drums), and Sarah Peacock (vocals and guitar).

Seefeel is a thorny album, a thicket of crackling guitars and faltering rhythms. Peacock's sparse, drifting vocals- at this point the last remaining element of the band's previous work- navigate their way through by gingerly pulling branches aside. The rhythms- usually live drums- are supplied by former Boredoms drummer Iida Kazuhisa, but they contain none of that band's combustible clamor.

Seefeel', while ultimately not as sinister as Succour, utilizes this idea in a very effective way. The style in which Seefeel have evaded various genre archetypes such as droning guitar chords and replaced them with scintillating bursts of static is a daring and impressive feat; it's akin to mining for the materials to make melodies from less obvious sources. It must have been much harder to do, but ultimately much more rewarding.
