The Holocene extinction, otherwise referred to as the sixth mass extinction or Anthropocene extinction, is a current event, and is one of the most significant extinction events in the history of the Earth. This ongoing extinction of species coincides with the present Holocene epoch (approx. 11,700 years), and is a result of human activity. This large number of extinctions spans numerous families of plants and animals, including mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and arthropods.

Zoos across the world are helping keep endangered species safe from extinction. Here are 10 amazing species saved from the brink by zoo conservation. The Arabian Oryx was hunted to extinction in the wild. However, from just a handful of animals in captivity the species was brought back from the brink thanks the conservation efforts of Phoenix Zoo and others. Through this incredible work, there are now over 1,000 of these magnificent animals back in the wild and thousands more looked after by zoos worldwide. The California Condor was once on the brink of extinction - there were only 27 left. The birds were taken into captivity to begin a breeding program to help save the California Condor from extinction.

Nine in ten frog species alive today descend from three genetic lineages. These lineages survived meteor impact that wiped out most of life on Earth. The first survivors weathered the strike by burrowing underground. The ability of these early ancestors to survive and thrive is the reason there are so many different frog species today. Nine out of 10 of the amphibian species are descended from just three genetic lineages that survived the mass extinction. The ability of these early ancestors to survive the meteor and thrive in its wake is the reason there are so many different frog species today. Scroll down for video. A handful of frog species rode out the meteor strike extinction event that killed the dinosaurs by burrowing underground.

Notes

Two filth-ridden rodents from Hong Kong hurl 17 tracks of experimental audio abuse at the world at the human race. Despite beginning as recording-only project, Descended From Rats ended up playing some live shows (check youtube) before releasing this album. They will be falsely accused of spreading the next plague.
