The B-52's is the debut album by the Athens, Georgia-based new wave band the B-52's. The kitschy lyrics and mood, and the hook-laden harmonies helped establish a fanbase for the band, who went on to release several chart-topping singles.

Both this version of "Rock Lobster" and its B-side "52 Girls" are different recordings from those on their first album, and the early version of "52 Girls" is in a different key. The re-recorded version of "Rock Lobster" was released as a single. In the UK and Germany it was backed with an instrumental version of "Running Around," a non-album track. A vocal re-recording of this would appear on their second album, Wild Planet. In April 1980, The B-52's returned to Compass Point Studios to record their follow-up album. Several of the songs for the new album had been concert staples since 1978; the band consciously did not record them for their first album since they already had too many tracks and they wanted a strong second album, knowing that their live performances would make fans look forward to it.

The B-52's are an American rock band that formed in 1976 in Athens, Georgia, United States. A major part of the new wave scene, the band started out as Fred Schneider (vocals), Kate Pierson (vocals, organ), Cindy Wilson (vocals, bongos), Ricky Wilson (guitar), and Keith Strickland (drums). After Ricky Wilson died in 1985, Strickland replaced him as a guitarist.

Rock Lobster is on the B-52's first album in 1979 - and Love Shack was released on Cosmic Thing in 1989. All the songs on Cosmic Thing were written by the whole band, jamming together trying to kick-start their creativity in the late 1980's after the death of Ricky Wilson. So are soungs like Is That You Mo Dean, Quiche Lorraine, and 52 Girls. People who have only heard this song should really listen to some more of their music. it's just so amazing.

These songs illustrated that the B-52's' adoration of camp culture wasn't simply affectation - it was a world view capable of turning out brilliant pop singles and, in turn, influencing mainstream pop culture. It's difficult to imagine the endless kitschy retro fads of the '80s and '90s without the B-52's pointing the way, but The B-52's isn't simply an historic artifact - it's a hell of a good time.
