Great fun. Great stuff. He offers plenty of variety, sometimes even backed by a "robot instrument" and even gets kind of adventurous at times, the sound sometimes foreshadowing elements of electronic music from the future, and not just in the obvious ways. Moog fans will want this. Reply Notify me Helpful. Great fun album I just found today on a chilean pressing (not-gatefold) from 1969. Reply Notify me 4 Helpful. I've mixed this album with techno, beatmatching The Minotaur with a Hawtin record
Released in 1969, it spawned a surprise Billboard Top 40 hit with The Minotaur -a song that was said to have influenced the progressive rock era of the 1970s. For instance, its improvised solo inspired a young Greg Lake to incorporate the Moog into the closing song of Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s eponymous debut album
In the late '60s, pianist Dick Hyman, famous for "Moritat, Theme from Threepenny Opera," aexperimented with various keyboard instruments, including Baldwin and Lowrey organs. Hyman took the Moog by the horns and milked it for all it was worth on nine originals, including the monster hit single "The Minotaur" (which inspired Emerson, Lake and Palmer's "Lucky Man"). Following the "The Minotaur" are two improvised pieces. Moog: The Electric Eclectics of Dick Hyman ends with "Evening Thoughts," an impressionistic track reminiscent of "Ebb Tide" by Earl Grant, on which the sounds of the seashore are conjured up on various keyboard instruments. Hyman writes about his intentions for each track in the liner notes.
This 1969 album was originally released on Command Records. making this MOOG release about as space-age as you could get in both sound and attitude. Extracted from the Varese Sarabande CD. "The Minotaur"charted in the US top 40 (US R&B Singles Hot 100 Canada) becoming the first Moog single hit. Originally released on 45 as the B-side to the shorter "Topless Dancers of Corfu"
