Elliot Goldenthal outdid himself with the epic score for this box-office bomb. A soaring, triumphant work brilliantly brought to life by the London Symphony Orchestra, Goldenthal's score surely would have received Oscar consideration if the film itself had performed better. Many moments are (as Goldenthal acknowledges in the liner notes) similar in style and texture to his work on Alien 3: modernist, dark, and percussion-heavy. But tracks like "Adagio and Transfiguration" simply bristle with bold orchestral writing, descending to a quiet, contemplative finish.

The soundtrack to the film was released on July 3, 2001 by Sony Music Entertainment. It was composed by Elliot Goldenthal, with the performing orchestra conducted by Belgian composer Dirk Brossé. A companion book, The Making of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within was published by BradyGames in August 2001.

Final Fantasy - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. I'm not big on RPG's so I don't know much about the "Final Fantasy" games, but I do hear that the scores are largely excellent so I was a bit surprised when the game composer wasn't used and the great Elliot Goldenthal was brought in instead. Unlike the movie which is a beautiful disappointment, the score is fantastic and definitely one of the best from this very underrated composer that does not get the respect he deserves.
