The Secret of Santa Vittoria is a 1969 film distributed by United Artists. It was produced and directed by Stanley Kramer and co-produced by George Glass from a screenplay by Ben Maddow and William Rose. It was based on the best-selling novel by Robert Crichton. The music score was by Ernest Gold and the cinematography by Giuseppe Rotunno.

Curiously, the original use of Waltzing Matilda is missing from the soundtrack album. The liner notes on this CD are extensive and very interesting. They include the album covers from when these soundtracks were originally issued as LPs, On the Beach in 1959 and The Secret of Santa Vittoria in 1969 and 1986. This CD is clearly a labor of love for the producers. They've done a great job with material for which they obviously have tremendous respect. Ernest Gold wrote a fine, melodramatic and understated score for "On The Beach" which Stanley Kramer rejected and sent back. It seems Gold, to establish place in the first score, used a few musical phrases from the Australian folk song Waltzing Matilda. Kramer was entranced with THAT. More of Waltzing Matilda, Kramer demanded, and before long Gold found himself doing the striking WM variations we hear on the soundtrack.
