Despite his projects' different approaches, Physical might not be as much of a departure for listeners as it was for Gurnsey to create. A drummer first and foremost, he remains in pursuit of the perfect rhythm, and his beats, whether played by hand or his 707, 808, and 909 drum machines, are just as gnawingly insistent as they are with his other project.

Gurnsey started writing tracks in his downtime from the group early 2017 and by the start of that Summer he had 30 demos ready for work. He admits he worked very quickly initially but then gave the tracks 12 months to develop fully into a new sound. Gurnsey admits that this is because there is a second reading of the album's theme for those willing to dig for it. "If you wanted to see it that way", he says, "the whole album could represent a night out experienced via a virtual reality headset from the safety of your own flat

Apparently, the best way to get inside Gabe Gurnsey’s debut solo LP is to ignore that he is one of the founders of Factory Floor; there’s a vast difference between the cold, lengthy, stripped-back no wave of FF, and the warmer, torrid and more succinct electro of Physical. This is (mostly) nonsense.
