Jaco Pastorius is the solo debut album by Jaco Pastorius, released in 1976. The album was produced by Bobby Colomby, drummer and founder of Blood, Sweat & Tears. The Essential Jaco Pastorius collects tracks the innovative jazz bassist recorded during the '70s and '80s. Included here are cuts off Pastorius' two studio albums as well as some of the work he did with the seminal fusion outfit Weather Report. Also featured are recordings he made with other artists including Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell.

Jaco Pastorius audaciously dubbed himself "The World's Greatest Bass Player," and then set out during his short, 26-year life to live up to the title. This 27-track collection captures him both live and in the studio with Weather Report, Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell and Herbie Hancock as well as the best of his solo recordings; includes Dibba Keel Barbary Coast; Hejira; Birdland; Punk Jazz; 4 .
