But no composer set more of Goethe than did Franz Schubert (1797 -1827), who composed over 700 songs during his short life. Schubert's settings of Goethe have been gathered together for the listener to explore on Naxos, a budget-priced CD label as part of its ambitious project of recording all the Schubert songs. This series is an excellent way to get to know Schubert, young native German-speaking singers, and young pianists. Music-lovers with a serious interest in lieder will enjoy comparing Schubert's settings of these poems with the later settings by Hugo Wolf. The CD includes texts and translations of all the poems and instructive program notes.

No. 2. Minona Author’s subtitle: The Mastiff’s Message Friedrich Anton Franz Bertrand () D. 152, composed 8 th February 1815, published 1894 How heavy and dark are the clouds scudding there Covering the beautiful light over here! How the rain rattles on roof and on pane, How furious and fierce the wind blusters out there Like spirits headlong into battle! How wondrously sudden their struggle falls quiet As if graves had banished their dealings and deeds! And over the heathland and over the wood How bleak the wind’s blowing, how cold the wind blows So horrid from the glimmering cliff!.

Winterreise (Winter Journey) is a song cycle for voice and piano by Franz Schubert (D. 911, published as Op. 89 in 1828), a setting of 24 poems by Wilhelm Müller. It is the second of Schubert's two great song cycles on Müller's poems, the earlier being Die schöne Müllerin (D. 795, Op. 25, 1823). Both were originally written for tenor voice but are frequently transposed to suit other vocal ranges – the precedent being established by Schubert himself
