Eric Coates, In Celebration Of His Centenary (1886 - 1957) ‎(LP, Album, Mono + LP, Album, Mono). Chappell & Co. ECC-100.

His music has, for a variety of reasons, survived better than that of his peers. But to aim to cover British light music of this century and not include Coates would almost be to re-write 'Hamlet' without the Prince. So here goes; those really wanting to know about Coates in detail are cordially referred to those two books, among others

Eric Coates (1886-1957 created some of the best-known and loved pieces of English light orchestral music, including 'By the Sleepy Lagoon' (1930), which is still used as the theme music for Radio 4's Desert Island Discs. He is said to have needed the right atmosphere to produce his work - his son Austin recalls how his father 'couldn't settle down to write music until he was properly dressed in the morning, complete with tie and Harris Tweed coat - and, perhaps, a Turkish cigarette'.

His output includes 2 symphonies, a violin concerto, a cello concerto, and the Romance for violin, as well as a number of Norwegian Rhapsodies for orchestra. At one time he was an intimate friend of Wagner. His attention turned to conducting. He was appointed principal conductor of the Royal Orchestra in Copenhagen, until his death. Music Is Life My Music Classical Music Composers Instruments Opera Singers Great Artists Gabriel Piano Conductors. Gabriel Urbain Fauré (1845–1924) French composer, organist, pianist & teacher. His musicological interest in 16th-, 17th- & 18th-century music led him to compose pieces based on the music of these periods. He also wrote a number of operas, the most famous of which is La fiamma, as well as piano music.

The Modern Jazz Society Presents a Concert of Contemporary Music is an album of music composed by John Lewis and arranged and condducted by Gunther Schuller which was originally released on the Norgran label. The Penguin Guide to Jazz awarded the album a "Crown" of recommended jazz recordings. All compositions by John Lewis. Little David's Fugue" - 5:33. The Queen's Fancy" - 4:52.

Although his music was immensely popular in his day (particularly with radio listeners) he suffered from a snobbish attitude by the musical Establishment, which tended to regard light music as inherently inferior to 'classical music'. In fact, Coates was a far more gifted composer than many so-called 'serious' composers, whose new works tend to be heard once, perhaps at the BBC Proms, and are then hardly heard of again. The fact that he never received a State honour is nothing short of scandalous  . With over an hour of music on each CD, plus great conducting, playing, and recording, this album is a real bargain.

Eric Coates defined the structure of Light music, adopting pre-existing forms like the suite, the symphony, and the peculiarly English fantasy. Ronald Binge's cascading string effect was later associated with the music of Mantovani. Binge's Sailing By became known for preceding the radio shipping forecast. Many compositions are familiar as theme music, for example: Trevor Duncan's theme to Dr. Finlay's Casebook or Edward White's Puffin' Billy; Eric Coates's By the Sleepy Lagoon - theme to Desert Island Discs; and Charles Williams' Devil's Galop
