Georgia O'Keeffe: The bones do not symbolize death to me. They are shapes that I enjoy. It never occurs to me they have anything to do with death. Narrator: O’Keeffe, who began her career in New York, eventually began living in the American Southwest in 1929. Georgia O'Keeffe: When I got to New Mexico that was mine. As soon as I saw it that was my country. I’d never seen anything like it before but it fitted to me exactly.

NARRATOR: When O’Keeffe made this charcoal drawing, she was teaching in South Carolina, far from the New York art scene. Early in 1916, a friend brought a group of O’Keeffe’s drawings to the photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Stieglitz was the proprietor of an influential New York gallery called 291. It was the first to show and support modern art in America. Stieglitz’s interest in O’Keeffe’s drawings encouraged her to continue her radical experiments. The two also began an intense correspondence, and Stieglitz debuted O’Keeffe’s charcoals in May in a three-person show at his gallery

In her seventies, Georgia O’Keeffe traveled in an airplane for the first time and was fascinated at the view looking down on the earth and the clouds. Around 1963, working in Abiquiu, New Mexico, she began a series featuring endless expanses of clouds. Starting with a relatively realistic depiction of small white clouds on a three-by-four-foot canvas, she progressed to more stylized images of the motif on larger surfaces, ultimately extending her idea across a canvas that spanned the entire twenty-four-foot width of her garage in Sky above Clouds IV, the culmination of the series.
