It's not all too hard to believe when you listen to it for the first time and you're immediately given the radio jingle motif of its existential title cut, a piece that is part character study (as narrated by Yvonne Connors), part modern classical tour-de-force. Connors, chosen by McAloon to record Megahertz in 1999, is nothing short of sublime on this piece; delivering lines that could be seen as mundane elsewhere now transformed into gripping and poignant.

I Trawl the Megahertz (stylised as i trawl the MEGAHERTZ) is an album originally released as a Paddy McAloon solo album in May 2003 on Liberty Records. Paddy McAloon listened to short wave radio programs and sampled them for the album. In 1999, Paddy McAloon, front man of British pop band Prefab Sprout, suffered detachment from both retinas in his eyes in quick succession, possibly due to congenital factors, which needed extensive surgery and left him nearly blind for some time. As such, he was left housebound, and rendered unable to write songs in his usual fashion, namely "hunched over a keyboard

Paddy McAloon's name is usually whispered in the same breath as other practitioners of the elusive beast known as Perfect Pop. People such as Todd Rundgren and Brian Wilson: sophisticates who know as much about George Gershwin's role in the evolution of modern popular song as that of Busted. The result is I Trawl The Megahertz: a nine track project so personal and removed from his previous work that it's been released under his own name. Aided by arranger, David McGuinness and classical crossover ensemble Mr McFall's Chamber, Paddy has fashioned a work of troubling beauty. The album is dominated by its opening title track: A 22-minute orchestral piece with a recurring motif, overlaid by the soft American voice of Yvonne Connors intoning poetry formed from McAloon's random dips into the ether. If on first listen it sounds pretentious, fear not.

I Trawl the Megahertz is the first solo album by Prefab Sprout singer-songwriter Paddy McAloon. With characteristic perversity, McAloon has chosen the moment of striking out under his own name to make the most self-effacing record of his career-his own voice only graces one track, "Sleeping Rough", and that doesn't appear until the album is almost over.
