It was released on February 15, 1984 by Sire Records as the album's fifth single. Written and composed by its producer Reggie Lucas, the song was remixed by Madonna's then-boyfriend John "Jellybean" Benitez. The singer used refined and expressive vocals to deliver lyrics about an unfulfilled love.

Madonna (retitled Madonna: The First Album for the 1985 re-release) is the debut album by American singer Madonna, released on July 27, 1983 by Sire Records. After having established herself as a singer in downtown New York City, Madonna was signed by Sire president Seymour Stein, due to the success of her debut single, "Everybody" (1982). She became the sole writer for most of the album's tracks, and chose Reggie Lucas as its primary producer.

A track from Madonna's debut album, this was written by her producer Reggie Lucas, who also wrote her song "Physical Attraction" (Madonna wrote or co-wrote all the other tracks except "Holiday"). The song is a great example of a writer tailoring a song for a specific artist - few would guess that this was written by a man. Lucas got a sense for what Madonna was all about by listening to her demo tapes and watching her perform. It's actually rather sophisticated and worthy of a lot discussion that's hidden in just a few lines of what just appears to be another upbeat top 40 pop song.

It was released on February 15, 1984, by Sire Records as the album's fifth single. The singer used refined and expressive vocals for the song, whose lyrics deal with the subject of a love that is never fulfilled.
