Sound of Lies is the fifth studio album by American rock band The Jayhawks. It peaked at number 112 on the Billboard 200. With the departure of Mark Olson, Gary Louris becomes the principal songwriter for Sound of Lies with an occasional co-write with bassist Marc Perlman. New drummer Tim O'Reagan also contributes "Bottomless Cup".

Like Wilco's Being There, Sound of Lies uses country-rock as a foundation and wanders off into a variety of different sonic territories, including surf rock and Beatlesque pop, bringing the music closer to the sound of adult alternative pop/rock. Although the surface of the album is pleasant and melodic, Louris has written a uniformly harrowing set of songs, inspired both by the dissolution of his partnership with Olson and a recent divorce. The lyrics have a naked, emotional honesty which would have been more affecting if the music echoed its sentiment, yet the record still has a subtle.

This song is by The Jayhawks and appears on the album Sound of Lies (1997). It's a matter of timeTill I fallIn the middle of the townThere stands a tall brick wallIn the middle of a dreamWhere time plays in betweenThe sound of lies rings funnyAgainst the truth. When I was young, outspokenMama said it'll work out rightThe sixteen brought a moody starMama said it'll work out rightMama said it'll work out rightBoulevards and green leaves billowing.
