This 1956 musical made Julie Andrews a star and brought Rex Harrison's career back to life. This recording was produced more than 40 years ago, only in mono, but from the day it was released it was a deserved phenomenon. It out-grossed the mega-hit show for months, and it still holds the record for the most weeks as a Billboard Top 40 album: 292. The reasons are many. Every song created character and advanced the plot. My Fair Lady was a show you "got"-and still get-on first listening-without having seen it.
The Broadway cast recording of the musical My Fair Lady was released as an album on April 2, 1956. The album became a massive seller, topping the charts on the US Billboard 200 for fifteen weeks at different times in 1956 (eight consecutive weeks), 1957, 1958 and 1959
My Fair Lady premiered on Broadway March 15, 1956, at the Mark Hellinger Theatre. The production earned Rex Harrison a Tony Award and Julie Andrews a nomination. Harrison reprised his performance in the 1964 film adaptation opposite Audrey Hepburn. It was last revived in 1993 with Richard Chamberlain and Melissa Errico.
Lerner and Loewe's elegant, indestructible musical is one of those rare Broadway triumphs to be transferred to the big screen with practically every note and lyric intact. Warner's plush film version also preserved for posterity the definitive performances of Rex Harrison as Professor Higgins (though Jack Warner originally wanted Cary Grant) and Stanley Holloway as Alfred Dolittle. Inevitably, the original soundtrack to My Fair Lady is remembered, like the film, for the absence of Julie Andrews, who starred in the Broadway and London stage productions, but was deemed, at least at the time when the casting decision had to be made, not enough of a star to carry the movie. Embarrassingly, by the time the movie opened, Mary Poppins had made her more than enough of a star to do s.
