Stephen Joseph Malkmus (born May 30, 1966) is an American musician best known as the primary songwriter and lead singer and guitarist of the indie rock band Pavement. He currently performs with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. Stephen Malkmus was born in Santa Monica, California, to Mary and Stephen Malkmus, Sr. His father was a property and casualty insurance agent. When Stephen Jr. was 8, the family moved north to Stockton, where he attended Carpinteria's Cate School and Lodi's Tokay High School

When promo copies of Stephen Malkmus’ eponymous 2001 solo album began to circulate, they bore the record’s working title: Swedish Reggae. It was an obvious joke that worked on two levels. There was the implicit contradiction in terms, which seemed more preposterous in a dial-up world where the internet had yet to dissolve geographic and musical boundaries; the gag was also rooted in the equally absurd notion that Stephen Malkmus would deign to make music that sounded like anyone other than himself

Stephen Malkmus is the debut album by Stephen Malkmus, released on February 13, 2001 by Matador Records. Malkmus had planned to create the record by himself, or through a smaller, local label, but eventually accepted the offer Matador asked, and he released it. Pre-release promotional CDs of the album exist under the working titles Jicks and Swedish Reggae. Malkmus intended to release the album as The Jicks, but Matador insisted that the album be released under his own name. The album peaked at in the US and in the U. .

This may be because he didn't have to deal with the confines and expectations of a new Pavement album; Malkmus didn't originally plan to release the album through Matador, which possibly removed some of the pressure to make a "statement" with this collection. Which is good, because instantly catchy, zany songs like "Troubbble" might not have made it to the album.

Complete your Stephen Malkmus collection. Per Matador represses of all OOP Malkmus records are on the way. I also asked about the possibility of Terror Twilight deluxe but they said it doesn't look promising.
