So many great recordings of Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto by David Oistrakh, so little time. There's his recording with Dimitri Mitropoulos leading the New York Philharmonic, his recording with Yevgeny Mravinsky leading the Leningrad Philharmonic, and his recording with Maxim Shostakovich leading the New Philharmonia - this recording. It depends on the coupling. This one comes with a quite lovely performance of the First Cello Concerto by Paul Tortelier with Paavo Berglund leading the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra from 1973. The Mitropoulos, however, comes with a rip-roaring performance of the same work by Rostropovich with Eugene Ormandy leading the Philadelphia from 1959 - an altogether more persuasive performance.

The Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-flat major, Op. 107, was composed in 1959 by Dmitri Shostakovich. Shostakovich wrote the work for his friend Mstislav Rostropovich, who committed it to memory in four days and gave the premiere on October 4, 1959, with Yevgeny Mravinsky conducting the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in the Large Hall of the Leningrad Conservatory. The first recording was made in two days following the premiere by Rostropovich and the Moscow Philharmonic, under the baton of Aleksandr Gauk.

Violin Concerto No. 1 (Shostakovich). The Violin Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Opus 77, was originally written by Dmitri Shostakovich in 1947–48. He was still working on the piece at the time of the Zhdanov decree, and in the period following the composer's denunciation it could not be performed. In the time between the work's initial completion and the first performance, the composer and its dedicatee, David Oistrakh, worked on a number of revisions

Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No. 1 & Violin Concerto No. 1. "Please retry". Written for and first performed by Mstislav Rostropovich and David Oistrakh we're fortunate to have their versions recorded. That is not to say that these great performances are the last word with these works and they have been taken up by other very fine interpreters since. These recordings by Oistrakh and Rostropovich should be in the collection of anyone who appreciates these two great works though that's not to say they should necessarily be the first choice to play. It's hard to imagine a finer performance than that by Rostropovich in the First Cello Concerto but given the.
