Philippe Zdar, one half of celebrated French house production duos Cassius and Motorbass, fell from a high window in a Paris building and passed away at the age of 52. His original work on tracks including "I <3 U So," "The Sound of Violence," "Toop Toop" and more, including his work producing and steering modern classic albums including Phoenix's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix and Cut Copy's Bright Like Neon Love made him one of the most influential creators of his age. Philippe Zdar, one-half of the influential French house duo Cassius, has died. He was 52, according to The New York Times. His agent confirmed the news in a statement sent to Pitchfork, saying Zdar accidentally fell from a high floor of an old building in Paris. Cassius was a collaboration between Philippe Zdar, who was born Philippe Cerboneschi, and Hubert Blanc-Francard (known in the group as Boom Bass). Their debut Cassius album was 1999 (released that year). Their 2016 album Ibifornia featured Pharrell, Beastie Boys’ Mike D, Cat Power, and others. Their new album Dreems was set for release this Friday, June 21. Zdar was also the owner of the esteemed Motorbass studio in Paris.

Zdar founded Cassius alongside Hubert Blanc-Francard in 1989, releasing their iconic debut album, ‘1999’, ten years later. In the mid-90s he joined Etienne De Crécy to form Motorbass. The duo’s solo album, ‘Pansoul’, is considered one of the most influential electronic records to ever come out of France, and a touchstone of the unmistakable French Touch sound. Zdar, born Philippe Cerboneschi, and Hubert Blanc-Francard had produced tracks for the French rapper MC Solaar before founding the dance music duo Cassius in 1989. They rose through the pioneering Paris electronic music scene known as French touch, producing remixes for groups such as Air. Zdar also formed Motorbass with Etienne de Crécy and released one album, Pansoul, in 1996. Zdar’s solo production for other artists earned him a reputation in his own right. He stepped in to save Phoenix’s 2000 debut album, United, when sessions with the initial producer went awry.
