The Grateful Dead is the debut album of the Grateful Dead. It was released by Warner Bros. Records in March 1967. According to the biographies of both bassist Phil Lesh and drummer Bill Kreutzmann, the band released the album as San Francisco's Grateful Dead. The album was primarily recorded at RCA's Studio A, in Los Angeles, in only four days. The band had wanted to record the tracks in their hometown of San Francisco, but no recording studios in the area had modernized equipment at the time

Minglewood joined his first band, the Rockin’ Saints, when he was in his late teens, playing local high school dances, and even tavern gigs before he was old enough to get into bars. He played organ and rhythm guitar. When he was in his early twenties he was part of a band called 'Sam Moon, Matt Minglewood & The Universal Power'. The group was formed in 1969 with Sam Moon and Minglewood sharing vocal duties. The band soon changed their name to Moon - Minglewood and performed regularly in the Halifax/Dartmouth metro area, becoming a staple at local high school dances in the area. In a spirited thrashing of New Minglewood Blues, guitarist Bob Weir sings like a hip, brash kid, which he was (Weir had recently turned 19). Welcome to another evening of confusion and high-frequency stimulation, Jerry Garcia announces in the first set. The long, strange trip was under way. Grateful Dead’s First Decade Captured in New Photo Memior. The first set opens with two songs that would appear on that album: the outlaw ballad Dupree’s Diamond Blues and the delicate Mountains of the Moon, the latter sung by Garcia with a brave (for the stage) vulnerability, framed by spidery guitar. The Dark Star that follows is arguably an equal – in spatial elegance and endearing, monkish vocal harmonies – of the one immortalized on Live Dead.
