Today, Mass Appeal premieres Jay IDK’s new track God Said Trap featuring Ash Riser, from Jay’s forthcoming project, SubTrap. Over the course of four minutes, the emcee battles his inner demons, debating whether he should continue selling weed or move onto more more lucrative options. Maryland bred rapper, Jay IDK, has been working carefully at building a buzz for himself in that community. With his debut LP, SubTRAP, the wordsmith has embedded himself as one of the major players. The press kit, which vaguely described the album as a paradox for trap music with substance or "Suburban Trap" if you will, sounded about as interesting as Terrence Howard in the role of a gangster. But instead, we find a richly layered and conceptually compelling project. This isn't a mixtape posing as an album. This track actually sets the tone for the rest of the album in a couple of ways " A bit of an odd way to start an introductory LP, right?

Maryland emcee Jay IDK dropped his SubTrap LP yesterday, bringing along southern and trap influences in the perspective of different characters, telling stories from each character’s perspective about goings-on around the city. On a brief stream through, Jay IDK (which stands for ignorantly Delivering Knowledge) seems to have paid great attention to the storytelling aspect of his music, using different voices, flows and tempos to further enhance the story of the person he’s telling.

Jay IDK emerged on the scene with his 2015 debut album Subtrap - home to the gritty standout "God Said Trap" - and followed up the conceptual album with the full-length project Empty Bank, released last September independently via his own HXLY label. Fast forward a year later, and the MC's buzz earned him a spot on tour with rapper Isaiah Rashad for his Lil Sunny tour in the .

Whoah the TPAB influence is real. I've only listened to the first three tracks, and it's very clear Jay IDK has absolutely no interest in basic song structure. The production has lots of interesting ideas and the rapping, at least for now, seems super conceptually driven. There'll be a lot to unpack on this project and I'm looking forward to it.
