December 12, 2017, 11:05am EST. You probably remember 2016 as the year of the Event Album, a seemingly endless stream of huge artists unleashing monolithic statements - often from out of nowhere, and usually while you were still trying to digest the album dropped by a different megastar just weeks earlier.

Here are our favourite albums from this year. Much like our 2017's Best Tracks feature, we arrived at this albums list by drawing on this year's Best Music features and asking for the opinions of RA staff and contributors. And again like that feature, the aim here isn't to be comprehensive-think of it as a snapshot of the albums we thought were somehow extraordinary. You'll also find a few compilations and mix CDs in there, releases that felt like artistic statements on a level with the best albums. That was the day Arca announced his third album with "Piel," the first taste of his new vocal-led music. Exactly ten months later, it feels like the record, along with its accompanying live show and videos, is the boldest artistic statement made in electronic music this year. 2017 was a momentous year for music within our Bleep world, and with our top 10 albums we have compiled what we consider to be the most important releases from across the board. While the top spot is taken with the razor-sharp electronica of Jlin's Black Origami, Lee Gamble landed on Hyperdub pushing the boundaries of ambient jungle forward, while Brainwaltzera's update on the classic Braindance sound topped the acid-electronic revival by a mile. A journey perfectly complimented by Blanck Mass' brilliant album of brainfreeze techno and angle grinder electronics that was World Eater. While a special dedication goes out to Photay whose Onism packed in the year's tightest selection of ear worms designed to move your mind.

The best albums of 2017 according to 6 Music's presenters. Mary Anne Hobbs: ‘Drunk’ is a complex modern soul record with a beautiful flow despite its fragmentation into 23 pieces. The record is unique in its lyrical narrative that feels like a personal conversation with Thundercat, and loaded with striking collaborations with Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, Kamasi Washington, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, co-producer Flying Lotus, and Thundercat’s young daughter.

JoJo began to battle with the label for not only keeping her album on hold, but also refusing to let her out of her seven-year contract. I had signed a seven-album deal, and I figured I could put out an album every year or two years," she recalled in a 2015 interview with Vulture. I wanted to keep making music with my family, so I didn't see it as a huge commitment. And I also believed through conversation and an understanding that if it wasn’t working out between us, it would be OK and we could go our separate ways.
