The date of the USSR’s collapse is well known. It’s not the day of the Belovezha Accords, nor the August coup. After this, Saudi Arabia increased oil production by . fold, and oil prices dropped by . fold, wrote Egor Gaidar, the architect of radical economic reforms in post-Soviet Russia in the 1990s. Petr Aven, who was the Minister of Foreign Economic Relations in Gaidar’s cabinet, and now an influential businessman, supports this interpretation: It was a major turning point in 1986 when oil prices fell and all possibilities to generate revenue crumbled. As with the other volumes it is a history not only of the English-speaking peoples, but also fo the world that they inhabit. Churchill traces the footsteps of these inhabitants, whether it is to Canada and South Africa, Australia and New Zealand or across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States. He charts the rise of Germany and the unification of Italy, and examines the situation in the Balkans in 1878 - all of which had a deep and lasting impact on the geography of the European continent today.
Flower children, the Summer of Love, and peace signs-the hippie subculture is well known within the United States. But did the counterculture that fueled the idealism of an entire generation make its way elsewhere? The historian William Jay Risch finds hippies in an unlikely place-the Soviet Union of the 1970s.
