The Artwoods' only album was an enjoyable mixture of club-oriented soul, R&B, and jazz with a strong organ spice, although it found them falling seriously behind their contemporaries in the British R&B scene in a crucial respect. Not one of the dozen tracks was a group original, and their vocal and interpretive ability was not so strong as to make that shortfall an irrelevance.

Artwoods, The. Art Gallery. One of the finest British R&B groups of the Sixties, The Artwoods starred such great players as organist Jon Lord, who later found fame with Deep Purple and Whitesnake, and dynamic drummer Keef Hartley, who went on to play with John Mayall. Here are the original 12 dynamic performances from their rare 1966 album, together with the best of their EP and singles tracks. Singer Art Wood roars through cover versions of soul classics like ‘I Keep Forgettin’’, while Jon Lord raves it up on his Hammond organ showcase number ‘Walk On The Wildside’.

Art Gallery ‎(LP, Album, Mono). Art Gallery ‎(CD, Album, RE). Repertoire Records.

However the CD is very comprehensive (both album and singles) and this is probably all you'll need. I have all of the Artwoods' original 45s and they are in my box marked "Treasures of 60s British R&B".

The Artwoods (also sometimes known by Decca Records as the Art Woods) were an English rock band who formed in 1963 and were professionally active between 1964 and 1967. They were a popular live attraction, rivalling groups such as the Animals, although, despite releasing a clutch of singles and an album, their record sales never reflected this popularity.
