Machine Gun is the second album by jazz saxophonist Peter Brötzmann, released on the Bro label in 1968, later reissued on the FMP label in 1971. In 1990 FMP issued the album on CD, adding two previously unreleased alternate takes.

Van Hove's clear, supple piano playing often serves as the bridge between Brötzmann's wilder stylings and Bennink's (often literally) off-the-wall punctuations. Brötzmann's bass sax work on "Bierhaus Wendel" is lush and creamy, especially in conjunction with Van Hove's accordion. The album ends with a charmingly schmaltzy vocal rendition of the title cut, featuring Brötzmann's crooning over the strangled bird cries produced (who knows how?) by Bennink and Van Hove's cocktail piano. This alone is worth the price of admission.

Brötzmann has designed most of his album covers. He taught himself to play clarinets, then saxophones; he is also known for playing the tárogató. Among his first musical partnerships was with double bassist Peter Kowald. For Adolphe Sax, Brötzmann's first recording, was released in 1967 and featured Kowald and drummer Sven-Åke Johansson. The album Nipples was recorded in 1969 with many of the Machine Gun musicians, including drummer Han Bennink, pianist Fred Van Hove, and tenor saxophonist Evan Parker, plus British guitarist Derek Bailey. The second set of takes from these sessions, called More Nipples, is more raucous. Fuck De Boere (Dedicated to Johnny Dyani) is a live album of free sessions from these early years, containing two long improvisations, a 1968 recording of "Machine Gun" live (earlier than the studio version) and a longer jam from 1970.

It has been reported online that the "true" 1st pressing has an *unboxed* FMP logo on the label and no date of 1975 on the sleeve and labels. Can anyone verify this?
