Square meal for every man. Dr. Martin Luther King. Square meal for every man and every woman. Slavery! Dr. I've been to the mountaintop. 33 years before Childish Gambino’s This is America, Kurtis Blow released this track on an album of the same name. While the hook may give the impression of sappy patriotism, the interspersed quotes and accompanying video reveal a deeper meaning. In reality, Kurtis Blow was merely attempting to expose America’s long legacy of contradictions and deviations from its ideals of democracy and peace. Unfortunately, the song itself was a dud and the album’s only charting track was the widely sampled If I Ruled The World.

America is the sixth album by rapper Kurtis Blow, released in 1985 (see 1985 in music). The album includes the song "If I Ruled the World" from the movie Krush Groove, Kurt's biggest hit since "The Breaks" and one of the last of his musical career. The album was the first album Kurtis Blow produced in a new deal with Pollygram Records that gave Kurtis the title, 'Hip Hop's First Millionaire".

Kurtis Blow is the self-titled debut album by American rapper Kurtis Blow. It was released in 1980 by Mercury Records. The record includes the song "The Breaks", which was often sampled later in hip-hop records, mainly for its introduction made by Blow's a cappella vocal, and for the drum break, giving a wordplay dimension to the title. Rappin' Blow, Pt. 2" was issued as a single that had a do-it-yourself B-side, the instrumental version.
