Temperate deciduous or temperate broad-leaf forests are a variety of temperate forest dominated by trees that lose their leaves each year. They are found in areas with warm moist summers and cool winters. The six major areas of this forest type occur in the Northern Hemisphere: North America, East Asia, Central and Western Europe (except Brittany, Cornwall, Wales, Ireland and western Scotland), Denmark, southern Sweden and southern Norway.

The deciduous forest is a common type of ecosystem, found throughout the temperate regions of the earth. Characterized by annual rainfall in excess of 30 inches, a change of seasons and trees that loose their leaves, these biological areas are found in both the temperate regions of the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. The bodies of water found within the forest include freshwater tributaries along with an occasional pond or swamp. Many freshwater tributaries begin as small springs seeping from the ground. Not only are these tiny water outlets dependent on the ground water table for their annual flow, but also the cover of the forest canopy aids the process by repelling the intense heat of the summer sun and thus decreasing the evaporation rate. In general, freshwater springs occur when ground water stored in underground aquifers finds it way to the earth's surface.
Deciduous trees lose their leaves at the end of their growing season. This occurs in the fall in temperate deciduous forests, and in the dry season in tropical and subtropical deciduous forests. The word deciduous is from the Latin word decidere, meaning to fall off. The term for leaf loss is abscission. These trees live in forests in the eastern United States, Canada, areas of Japan and China and most of Europe. Other names for deciduous trees are broadleaf trees or hardwood trees. Evergreens are trees that do not lose their leaves. Types of Deciduous Trees.
Temperate deciduous forests receive 30 - 60 inches of rain each year and are ranked second only to the rainforest as the rainiest biome. Although the average temperature is 50° F, the winter typically sees temperatures below freezing. The trees of the temperate deciduous forest are deciduous of course. Their leaves change color with the season and eventually fall to the ground during winter. The four seasons are easily recognizable and each lasts about 3 months. Because there are deciduous trees here, the soil is very fertile and rich with nutrients.
Deciduous simply means falling off at a particular season. So, deciduous forest is a kind of biome where leaves fall off the trees when winter knocks. Deciduous Forest Biome. Every animal and plant on the face of the earth relies on other living organisms to get by. The way these living organisms interact with the air, water, sun and amongst themselves is referred to as an ecosystem. Within the ecosystem, the living organisms work hand-in-hand to establish an equilibrium that enables all of its constituents to flourish. This brings us to a biome, which refers to a large group of similar ecosystems. All the areas in a biome consist of related animals, plants, and weather
Classical elements typically refer to the concepts, rejected by modern science, in ancient Greece of earth, water, air, fire, and (later) aether, which were proposed to explain the nature and complexity of all matter in terms of simpler substances.
Temperate Deciduous Forest. 30°C to 30°C, yearly average is 10°C, hot summers, cold winters. 750 to 1,500 mm of rain per year. Broadleaf trees (oaks, maples, beeches), shrubs, perennial herbs, and mosses. Temperate deciduous forests are most notable because they go through four seasons. Leaves change color in autumn, fall off in the winter, and grow back in the spring; this adaptation allows plants to survive cold winters.
