Miles Davis Quintet (PRLP 185) is a 10 inch LP album by Miles Davis, released in 1954 by Prestige Records. The album title is not to be confused with either of Davis' later Great Quintets. The three tracks on this LP, and one other, were recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey, on April 3, 1954. This was the first session for Prestige Davis recorded at Gelder's home studio, as he would all his remaining sessions for the label.

The New Miles Davis Quintet made its first visit to the recording studios on November 16, 1955. By October 26, 1956, when they made their last session for Prestige, Davis had signed with recording giant Columbia, he had featured the most influential band in all of jazz (which would spawn the most charismatic musician of the '60s), and was well on his way toward international stardom. Philly Joe Jones' dancing hi-hat reverie introduces "How Am I to Know," and the band takes it at a galloping tempo. The youthful bassist pushes the music into more modern directions with his solid time, driving beat, ringing tone, and uncanny sense of melodic counterpoint.

Miles Davis adjusts the mouthpiece of his trumpet at a New York club in 1958. He famously paid as much attention to what notes he did not play as to those he did. "I always listen to what I can leave out," he once said. Classically trained, he joined Miles Davis' quintet at age 20 in 1955 and stayed until 1963. In addition to Kind of Blue, he played on several landmark albums including Coltrane's Giant Steps, Monk's Brilliant Corners, and Oliver Nelson's The Blue and the Abstract Truth. He also made several albums as leader fo Blue Note.

Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet. Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet is an album recorded in 1956 by Miles Davis. Two sessions on 11 May 1956 and 26 October in the same year resulted in four albums-this one, Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet, Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet and Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet. These four albums are considered to be among the best performances in the whole hard bop subgenre.
