Igor Stravinsky (Composer), Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (Composer), Claude Debussy (Composer), Bela Bartok (Composer), Sergey Rachmaninov (Composer), Maurice Ravel (Composer), Emmanuel Chabrier (Composer), Ernest Ansermet (Conductor), L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (Orchestra) & 6 more Format: Audio C. His affinity for French music is heard in a lovely version of Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, a sparkling Ravel La Valse (which, like the Stravinsky, he premiered), and a scintillating "Fète Polonaise" from Chabrier's Le Roi malgré lui. Most of the set's contents remain among the better versions of these works, so its appeal extends beyond the ranks of conductor collectors and Ansermet fans. Even the Suisse Romande orchestra's famously strident wind section makes a positive contribution to this interpretive aesthetic, which works particularly well in the two late works, Jeux and Khamma, where clarity of texture enhances the composer's daring harmonic palette. They include Benjamin Britten, Claude Debussy, Peter Eötvös, Heinz Holliger, Arthur Honegger, Michael Jarrell, Frank Martin, Darius Milhaud and Igor Stravinsky. Since 2000, the OSR has given the world premières of around two dozen works in cooperation with Radio Suisse Romande. The orchestra also supports new music in Switzerland by regularly commissioning works from such composers as William Blank and Michael Jarrell.
