Music fans born after 1960 are less likely to be aware that Nat King Cole began his career as an influential jazz pianist, so much so that the great Art Tatum and the up-and-coming Oscar Peterson formed trios similar to Cole’s.
These were Cole's debut recordings. Originally recorded and released in sets of 78 . records between 1944–49, they were reissued in 1950 on 10-inch LPs. The original releases of Volume 3 (as 78 . record album) and Volume 4 (as 78 . m record album and as 45 . record box set) only contained 6 songs (3 records per set). Nat King Cole at the Piano.
Released in 1956, the appropriately titled The Piano Style of Nat King Cole contains a whopping (by mid-'50s standards at least) 16 tracks. Half of the material finds the artist supported by a large band and the other with a warm, cozy string section. And making a great thing almost sinful is that the entire effort is orchestrated and conducted by the peerless Nelson Riddle. True to the nature of artist and arranger alike, the project is filled with traditional pop tunes straight out of the Great American Songbook. While the melodies are familiar, each is given a unique sonic stamp.
Nat King Cole at the Piano is Nat King Cole's fifth studio album, but is the first non "King Cole Trio" album released by Cole and his trio. The album was recorded on a single day, August 13th, 1947, and was first released two years later. Three Little Words" (Bert Kalmar, Harry Ruby). Moonlight In Vermont" (John Blackburn, Karl Suessdorf). Poor Butterfly" (Raymond Hubbell). How High the Moon" (Nancy Hamilton, Morgan Lewis).
L-O-V-E (Nat King Cole album). L-O-V-E is the final studio album by the American singer Nat King Cole. It was arranged by Ralph Carmichael. L-O-V-E was Cole's last album, and was released shortly before his death in February 1965. The songs "The Girl from Ipanema", "My Kind of Girl" and "More (Theme From Mondo Cane)" were recorded December 1–3, 1964, shortly after Cole's diagnosis with lung cancer, and were the last recordings he made
