This is Breathe Owl Breathe. A printmaker, a geomorphologist, and a native of Colombia, respectively, the trio transformed their ancient home into a four-season sonic and visual workshop. Through the snow and the sun (and the bugs), Breathe Owl Breathe created Magic Central (the name they also gave their cabin). It's a pop album like no other, a timeless aural cartogram of feeling, soul, skill, and story. You could have found it in the attic. It could have dropped from space.

Jauntily mysterious seems to be the emotion of the day on Breathe Owl Breathe's Magic Central, which starts with "Own Stunts," a song that balances a rollicking stomp of a chorus with a gentle, distanced air, due to singer Micah Middaugh having a bit of Nick Drake to him. Said chorus is wordless - pianos, strings, and just a feeling of space fill and empty the background - and even the bigger drum stomp later doesn't seem to remove the feeling of potential space, even isolation.

Breathe Owl Breathe is Micah Middaugh, Andréa Moreno-Belas, and Trevor Hobbs. Micah: acoustic and electric guitars, singing, casio, feedback, well kept secrets. Andréa: cello, singing, banjo, strings, synth, casio, percussion, toy piano, pandeiro, cuica, spears and torches Trevor: drums, percussion, wandering genie organ, piano, singing, casio, wurlitzer, farfiza, tympani, marimba, Indian dinner bell. There is magic aplenty in Magic Central (mostly when Micah Middaugh's Bill Callahan-like tone plays against Andréa Moreno-Beals' floaty vocals) but the spell is quickly broken by in-jokes and too much talk of dragons and butterflies.
