Josep Colom - beautiful performances of Brahms and Chopin, Debussy and Ravel, Beethoven, de Falla and Mompou. Josep Colom began his piano studies with his aunt in Barcelona, then in Paris at the École Normale de Musique. This was followed by several first prizes in major competitions, and a debut in Paris in 1979. The recordings began in 1982.

Stephen Hough (piano), Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, Mark Wigglesworth (conductor). These works are among the greatest in the genre, and shore up Brahms’s reputation as both a symphonist and a piano composer. Stephen Hough has proved himself a superb Brahms player in various discs of the solo piano music, and this very satisfying double album of the two Concertos confirms and augments his reputation.

The Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15, is a work for piano and orchestra completed by Johannes Brahms in 1858. The composer gave the work's public debut in Hanover, the following year. It was his first-performed orchestral work, and (in its third performance) his first orchestral work performed to audience approval. This concerto is written in the traditional three movements and is approximately 40 to 50 minutes long.

In the toughest works, like the Paganini Variations, the finale of the Third Piano Sonata, and the last of the Opus 119 pieces, Rösel is on top of the notes and nothing goes amiss. In the thorniest works, like the Handel Variations, the Scherzo from the Third Piano Sonata and the slow movement of the Second Piano Sonata, Rösel gets underneath the music and illuminates it. But any time Brahms gets Romantic, Rösel goes missing. And since Brahms' piano music is quintessentially Romantic, that means that most of the expressive content goes unexpressed.
