Bernard Haitink first conducted the Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1956. He was the orchestra’s chief conductor from 1961-88, and was named honorary conductor in 1999. From 1977 to 1987, Haitink received international acclaim for his interpretations of Mahler in the Eurovision Christmas Matinees. Many listeners still remember the last of these Matinees, with a poignant performance of the Ninth Symphony – shortly before Haitink’s retiring as chief conductor.

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is widely considered one of the very best orchestras in the world. Time and time again, critics have lauded its unique sound. The extraordinary acoustics of The Concertgebouw and the exceptional musicians themselves play an important role in this respect. Another important contributing factor is the influence exerted on the orchestra by its chief conductors, of whom there have been only seven since 1988. Daniele Gatti was appointed chief conductor in September 2016
Symphony No. 1 in D major by Gustav Mahler was mainly composed between late 1887 and March 1888, though it incorporates music Mahler had composed for previous works. It was composed while Mahler was second conductor at the Leipzig Opera, Germany. Although in his letters Mahler almost always referred to the work as a symphony, the first two performances described it as a symphonic poem or tone poem. 1903 – 25 October, Dutch première: Amsterdam, with the composer conducting the Concertgebouw Orchestra. 1909 – 16 December, American première: New York City, the New York Philharmonic conducted by the composer.
