Gillett takes care to whip up an appropriate mishmash, pairing organic folk music with weird hybrids. With Fat Marley's "Xin," the album starts out in a murky netherworld, where vocals by an Indian man and a Chinese woman float over a base of Brazilian reggae. The gauzy production sounds decidedly modern, but it diffuses into organic Argentine accordions and crisp Gypsy beats in the next few songs. Gillett adopts a conciliatory tone in his liner notes, trying to lure listeners into what he calls the album's "collage of virtual unreality. But tracks such as Markscheider Kunst's "Kvasa Kvasa" make a convincing case on their own; leaning tropical rhythms against glancing African guitars, the song gives a danceable base to vocals that point to their homeland - Russia. The latest instalment in Charlie Gillett's series of annual world music round-ups is a mixed bag of favourites, imperfect but interesting, an appetite-whetter. Drop who featured on World 2004) and Eastern Asia. one track again: a gently avant-garde three-minute composition for baritone saxophones by Akira Mizutani. The Americas fare only slightly better, with one musician representing the North (Lhasa) and two the South. Argentinean accordion player Chango Spasiuk; and Seu Jorge, who's had a good year.

Plus a visit to the World on 3 studio by Massukos from northern Mozambique. Their debut album 'Kuimba kwa Massuko' sold huge quantities, was voted best album in 2002 and won a gold disc in 2003. Several more awards followed and Massukos are now considered Mozambique's most successful band. But they also use their high profile to initiate social change. In 2004 for instance, they appeared at the Third World Water Forum in Japan and toured Mozambique with the UK band Empty Boat as part of an awareness-raising event organized by Poo Productions in association with WaterAid UK.
