On his third album in the last six months, Japan's Nobukazu Takemura closes his laptop, sits down with partner Aki Tsuyuko, and makes an album of songs backed with (mostly) acoustic instruments. In the past, Tsuyuko has provided the vocal inspiration for career highlights like "Kepler" and "Wax & Wane", though on the last couple of Takemura projects she's been replaced by processed and computer-generated voices  . Problems are evident on the opening "Mirror Tower", which is just Takemura's nylon-stringed guitar and Tsuyuko's voice. Tsuyuko's notes sound almost random, for one thing- there's essentially no melody.

Poised halfway between experimental rock and indie pop, Nobukazu Takemura treated Songbook as a songwriter album, inviting Japanese vocalists to help flesh out these guitar- and Casio-driven pop songs. A set of competing synth-brass lines make the opener, "Mahou No Hiroba," a special delight; elsewhere, Takemura appears to enjoy removing so many song elements that listeners are forced to envision what could be added to make a "proper" pop song out of the track.
