During a career spanning 57 years, he released 79 albums and sold more than 110 million records worldwide, mainly in the French-speaking world, making him one of the best-selling artists in France and in the world.

Johnny Hallyday and his wife Laeticia attended the 2016 AFI Fest. The French rock star and actor Johnny Hallyday has died aged 74, according Agence France Presse.

Johnny Hallyday (Jean-Philippe Léo Smet, b. 15 June 1943 in Paris – d. 6 December 2017, in Marnes-la-Coquette) was a French singer and actor. Influenced by Elvis Presley and the 1950s rock 'n' roll revolution, Hallyday became famous in the 1960s for singing rock 'n' roll in French. Hallyday's father, Léon Smet (1908–1989), was Belgian; his mother, Huguette Clerc (1920–2007), was French.

Jean-Philippe Smet, known by his stage name Johnny Hallyday, French pronunciation: (born 15 June 1943, Cité Malesherbes, Paris, France) is a Frenchsinger and actor. An icon in the French-speaking world since the beginning of his career, he was considered by some to have been the French Elvis Presley. He was married for 15 years to popular Bulgarian-French singer Sylvie Vartan and the two were considered a "golden couple" for 20 years

Johnny Hallyday rose to fame epitomizing France's postwar love affair with all things American, copying Elvis Presley's quiff and leather trousers and bringing rock and twist beats to the Grande Nation. His initial success wasn't supported, though, by all sections of society; older generations expressed their dismay at his style, which some saw as a means of corrupting the youth. Hallyday frequently recounted an anecdote of how a French radio announcer had once smashed his first record on air, saying, "You will never hear that again. He also toured several US cities and even appeared on the popular "Ed Sullivan Show.

Johnny Hallyday epitomised French postwar youth's love affair with all things American - infuriating an older and official France that was snooty about American taste and still wary of US domination. The rocker loved to tell how a French radio announcer smashed his first record on air, saying, "You will never hear that again. Hallyday longed so much to make it big in the United States that he recorded his third album, Johnny Hallyday Sings America's Rockin' Hits, entirely in English in Nashville in 1962. Two further attempts failed until Hallyday's American dream finally came true in 1996 when 5,000 of his French fans flew the 9,000 kilometres to see him play Las Vegas.
