Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (L. 86), known in English as Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, is a symphonic poem for orchestra by Claude Debussy, approximately 10 minutes in duration. It was composed in the year 1894, the same year that the piece was first performed. It was first performed in Paris on 22 December 1894, conducted by Gustave Doret. The flute solo was played by Georges Barrère.
Perhaps that is why Leopold Stokowski paid so much attention to his work. Stokowski's uncanny ability to take the beautiful and make it something spectacular is on full display in this album. All of the pieces offered on this album are, for the most part, standard Debussy fare, but Stokowski was never one for standard. He enlivens the amazing to make it stellar, he illuminates an already brilliant diamond with more intense clarity and clever nuances that can only be described as flawless. The pieces offered are: 1) "Prelude a L'Apres-Midi d'un Faun" (Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun) which is one of Debussy's best known pieces and which is considered by many to be a huge turning point in the world of classical composition due to its use of atonality, modulations and tritones in the harmony and the melody. I'm no musical expert, but I've done my studying on Debussy's works).
