Into the Great Wide Open is the eighth studio album by American rock band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, first released in 1991. The album was the band's last with MCA Records. The album was the second Petty produced with Jeff Lynne after the success of Full Moon Fever. The first single, "Learning to Fly", became the band's joint longest-running No. 1 single (along with "The Waiting" from 1981's Hard Promises) on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, spending six weeks at the top spot

Into the Great Wide Open" is the third song on the 1991 album Into the Great Wide Open by the group Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The music video for the single, directed by Julien Temple, starred Johnny Depp as the protagonist, Eddie Rebel, as well as Gabrielle Anwar as Eddie's girlfriend and Faye Dunaway as his manager, and featured cameos by Terence Trent D'Arby, Chynna Phillips, and Matt LeBlanc.

Produced by Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty & Mike Campbell (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers). Album Into the Great Wide Open. Into the Great Wide Open Lyrics. Eddie waited 'til he finished high school He went to Hollywood, got a tattoo He met a girl out there with a tattoo, too The future was wide open They moved into a place they both could afford He found a night club he could work at the door She had a guitar and she taught him some chords The sky. was the limit. Into the great wide open Under them skies of blue Out in the great wide open A rebel without a clue.

For the follow-up, Into the Great Wide Open (released 25 years ago today, on July 2, 1991), Petty re-upped with Lynne and reunited the Heartbreakers. The results are about what you'd expect: more retro-minded rock ’n’ roll songs presented with modern sheen and maybe a hair more oomph than fans got on Full Moon Fever. Despite the lack of monster pop singles like Free Fallin’, which became Petty’s calling card, Into the Great Wide Open isn't an inferior sequel

Out in the great wide open, a rebel without a clue. HOW TO PLAY "Into The Great Wide Open".

The Heartbreakers' sound has remained similar throughout their career, but they had never quite repeated themselves until here. And considering this, perhaps it wasn't surprising that Petty chose to change producers and styles on his next effort, the solo Wildflowers.

The commercial success of Tom Petty’s solo album Full Moon Fever possibly encouraged him to invite his fellow Traveling Wilbury Jeff Lynne to coproduce Into the Great Wide Open alongside Petty and Heartbreaker Mike Campbell. Lynne’s years with ELO inform everything he does, and here he tightens and brightens The Heartbreakers' sound until the harmonies are built like brick walls and the playing sounds as treated as possible.
