Sir John Dankworth died on February 6, 2010 at age 82. Born in Woodford, Esssex on September 20, 1927, Dankworth had violin and piano lessons before settling eventually on the clarinet at the age of 16 after hearing a recording of the Benny Goodman Quartet. Inspired by Johnny Hodges, he switched to alto saxophone while studying at London's Royal Academy of Music from 1944-1946. In 1949, Dankworth attended the Paris Jazz Festival and played with jazz legend Charlie Parker. Shortly after, he toured Sweden briefly with another jazz legend, soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet.

Sir John Phillip William Dankworth, CBE (20 September 1927 – 6 February 2010), also known as Johnny Dankworth, was an English jazz composer, saxophonist, clarinetist and writer of film scores. With his wife, jazz singer Dame Cleo Laine, he was a music educator and also her music director.

Jacqueline Caryl Dankworth MBE (born 5 February 1963) is a British jazz singer. She is the daughter of jazz singer Cleo Laine and musician John Dankworth. Dankworth was born in Northampton, Northamptonshire, England. She attended St. Christopher School in Hertfordshire and is an alumna and fellow of Guildhall School of Music & Drama. She worked as an actress with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre, and in West End theatre
