Hellmut Hattler (born 12 April 1952 in Ulm, Germany) is a German jazz and rock bassist and composer. Hattler took much of his early influences from Jimi Hendrix. As a child, he received violin lessons, and in the 1960s, he played guitar. Joining Peter Wolbrandt's band marked the debut of his changeover to the bass. In May 1971, he founded the pop group Kraan with the Wolbrandt brothers Peter and Jan and Johannes Pappert.

Unfortunately virtuoso bassist Helmut Hattler does not have even an adequate voice, and the lyrics to most of the songs on Bassball are pretty lame. Example: "I know this girl/anaemic Heather/our love depended/on the weather. Elsewhere he tries to rhyme "senses" and "panties," which is difficult even when sung in a heavy German accent. The sad thing is that these banal or accidentally funny outpourings are backed up by a brilliant band of musicians.

The album title "Bassball II" refers to Hellmut Hattler’s very first solo album "Bassball" from 1977. He takes up the cognition as a stimulus that he’s got ideas in his head which could only be realized outside of his former homebase, the band KRAAN.
