Dorothy Norwood (born May 29, 1935) is an American gospel singer and songwriter. She began touring with her family at the age of eight, and in 1956, began singing with Mahalia Jackson. In the early 1960s she was a member of The Caravans, and in 1964, she embarked on a solo career, recording her first album, Johnny and Jesus. Her 1991 album Live with the Northern California GMWA Mass Choir reached the Number 1 position on Billboard′s Top Forty.

Also known as. The World's Greatest Gospel Storyteller. Norwood launched her solo career in 1964 and recorded her first album Johnny and Jesus on Savoy Records. It brought her national attention and was certified Gold. Willie Morganfield, Dorothy Norwood, Bobby Patterson, Bobby Rush, Soul Stirrers, Joe Stampley and the Uniques, Nat Stuckey, Little Johnny Taylor, Ted Taylor, Traveling Echoes, Big Joe Turner, Ike & Tina Turner, Violinaries, Justin Wilson, and Young-Holt Unlimited. The most successful release was in 1968 with "Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)" by John Fred and His Playboy Band from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Her first album on the Malaco label, Dorothy Norwood and the Northern California . Mass Choir-Live continues to be a tremendous success. Her rendition of Victory Is Mine was number one ( in the Billboard Magazine after only seven (7) weeks. Her success and unity with the Malaco family has continued for nine years. Other hits with Malaco includes, Shake the Devil Off (1995), Hattie B’s Daughter (1996), and Old Rickety Bridge (2000) with the Miami Mass Choir. The latest album, just released in 2002 Dorothy Norwood, Live at Home which was recorded live in Atlanta.
