NOTE: Thai Funk Vol. 1 is down to the last 100 copies, which will not include the hand sticked bags. Over two years ago, Bangkok crate digger Maft Sai from ZudRangMa Records Thailand complied the now legendary Thai Funk: ZudRangMa Vol. 1 CD, showcasing 18 forgotten Thai pop, garage rock, funk, and disco tracks by a cross-section of local 1960s-70s artists unknown outside of Southeast Asia. The limited set came housed in a stunning hand-stitched soft cloth sleeve and was culled and created from the used record bins and bustling street markets of the region. Housed in a deluxe gatefold tip-on old-school jacket with a plethora of vintage album art, lovingly remastered audio, and to top it off, the beautiful Thai print hand-stitched cloth outer sleeve (w/ four color/pattern variations) that the original CD was famous for, we are honored to help spread this important cultural message.

Known for the highly heralded Folie Distinguée album in 1985, what is often over looked is the fact there accompanied 2 further Alternative Funk cassette compilations that same year. Coming within the Audiologie series on Vox Man Records, these Various Artist selections were indicative of labels that sprung up in the early 80s around the DIY post-punk scene.

Talk about Various - Thai Funk Volume One

Gom
These two comps, plus the Soundway 'Sound of Siam' and the Finders Keepers 'Thai Dai' .... oh yeah, and the Paradise Bangkok stuff - are just about the best I've discovered from Thailand, the land of smiles. I'm sure there's a lot more out there and I'm by no means an expert - but those comps are the best I've found. (Oops - just remembered the original Thai Beat A-Go-Go on Subliminal Sounds - they are great too). The packaging on these two LITA double albums is superb... I just bought 'em on sight, regardless of the music within. There's a ton of good stuff on them though. Including a weird version of Pink Floyd's Another Brick In the Wall.... plus odd disco, pop and funk things. Good fun.The production is quite often the same on Thai pop records... a bit like India or Turkey where they have a fairly limited palate of studio effects - including the hyper-compressed and tinny sound which I guess is made to cut through AM radios / in cars/ shops and on cheap record players. Its a generic, universal sound. A pity that the production wasn't varied a bit more... with greater bottom-end and attention to detail. But I'm sure all thse records were cut extremely quickly, then bought, sold and forgotten about just as quick. Fine stuff for students and curious sonic travellers.

I Love ZudRangMa, and these compilations especially. Some of these are quite hilarious to listen to.. "Luke Ron" for instance, almost broke down laughing at this genius James Brown cover. But is not all comedy and fun. Some of these are great covers too. Rus Pu Tin is one, an outstanding cover of Boney-M´s Rasputin. Others have great musicians and musicianship, not just karaoke dreadfulness (and some not). Some are even blistering deep funk re-incarnated fuel. But great job, and essential listening by the label. If you are looking for samples, pick this one up (with the vol.2). Diggers paradise for breaks.
