The first 12" album recorded by Sinatra, Wee Small Hours was more focused and concentrated than his two earlier concept records. It's a blue, melancholy album, built around a spare rhythm section featuring a rhythm guitar, celesta, and Bill Miller's piano, with gently aching strings added every once and a while. Within that melancholy mood is one of Sinatra's most jazz-oriented performances - he restructures the melody and Miller's playing is bold throughout the record

In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" is a 1955 popular song composed by David Mann, with lyrics by Bob Hilliard. It was introduced as the title track of Frank Sinatra's 1955 album In the Wee Small Hours. It was composed by Mann and Hilliard during a post-midnight session at Hilliard's New Jersey home. Mann was about to depart for New York when Hilliard insisted he remain to try some impromptu songwriting.

What was to stop Sinatra blending in and becoming just another faded star". Scary thought, huh" That fact makes In The Wee Small Hours a serious contender for the most influential musical work of the 20th century. History remembers Sinatra as an arrogant, swaggering man, full of life and full of bravado. Even "Love & Marriage", later adopted as the theme for TV series Married With Children. In The Wee Small Hours destroys that notion. This is the sound of a man descending into depression, a man alone. His legendary voice is now underpinned not by masculinity, but by longing and sadness.
