However, Pattern + Grid World feels as much like a complete work as its full-length predecessor, from the engine-revving opener "Clay" to the squelching closer "Physics For Everyone!" And this despite its ultra-short (barely 19 minutes) runtime. Because of its brevity, the EP serves a solid entry point to Flying Lotus' work. Perhaps the only serious complaint that could be lodged against Cosmogramma is that it was daunting- too dense, complicated, and harsh for casual listeners and first-time beat freaks.

Pattern + Grid World. LP (12" album, 33 rpm). Flying Lotus Format: Vinyl.

Cosmogramma is the third studio album by American music producer Steven Ellison as Flying Lotus, released by Warp Records on May 3, 2010. The album's recording sessions began in October 2008 in Ellison's apartment in Los Angeles, immediately following his previous album and the death of his mother. Ellison used a laptop, a sampler and a drum machine, along with live instruments.

Pattern + Grid World is so endearing because it sounds like Ellison, free of expectation or narrative, is simply having fun. Perhaps paradoxically, it's this giddy sense of freedom that allows the loosely-defined producer the transcendence he's often ascribed, rising above the rafters of convention while remaining firmly grounded. The Loop, out later this month, also features contributions from Thundercat, Anderson. Paak, Seven Davis Jr, Kamasi Washington and more. Flying Lotus to score and executive produce new Netflix anime series. Yasuke will star Lakeith Stanfield, of Sorry To Bother You and Donald Glover's show Atlanta.

The EP's sixth track "Camera Day" was later sampled for rapper Killer Mike's 2011 song "Swimming", which was released as part of Adult Swim's single series.
