Bart's first professional musical was 1959's Lock Up Your Daughters, based on the 18th-century play Rape upon Rape by Henry Fielding. Following that, Fings Ain't Wot They Used T'Be produced by Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, was noted for encouraging the use of authentic Cockney accents on the London stage and bringing an end to censorship of British theatre. Bart died at the Hammersmith Hospital in West London on 3 April 1999, of liver cancer. His funeral was held at Golders Green Crematorium 2013 saw the publication of David and Caroline Stafford's detailed biography The Lionel Bart Story: Fings Ain't Wot THey Used T'Be.

Album One is made up of original cast recordings of his 3 stage shows Fings Ain't What They Used To Be, Lock Up Your Daughters and Oliver, with not a bad track amongst them. Album Two begins with his early songs for Tommy Steele, through Cliff Richard, Frankie Vaughan, Shirley bassey, Adam Fath and even Lionel Bart himself - all catchy songs that sound as fresh now as they did half a century ago when many of them were first recorded. I was more than pleased to purchase this set as there were many original Lionel Bart UK top 20 chart hits. I knew he was a prolific writer of songs, but having many of them under one 3cd set by Sepia was a genuine pleasure to listen.

The lyrics were written by Lionel Bart and the music by Laurie Johnson. It was first produced on the London stage in 1959. In 1969, it was made into a film starring Christopher Plummer, Susannah York, and Glynis Johns, but the songs were deleted. Lock Up Your Daughters opened in London at the Mermaid Theatre on 28 May 1959, where it ran for 328 performances. This was the first production at the theatre. Directed by Peter Coe with choreography by Gilbert Vernon, and stage design by Sean Kenny, it featured Stephanie Voss (Hilaret Politic), Hy Hazell (Mrs. Squeezum), Terence Cooper (Capt.
