It was a happy time for Lee; his music was hot on the charts, he was fully immersed in his collaboration with his muse, Suzi Jane Hokom. Elsewhere, the honky tonk madness of Suzi Jane Is Back In Town, the Byrds-like jangle of In Our Time and–in the bonus tracks–an instrumental named Batman confirm this to be one of Hazlewood’s most far-ranging, far-out LPs ever. It’s the result of two main factors: ambition–to top Phil Spector, primarily–and cash, which paid for orchestras, plush studios, and the inestimable talents of arranger Billy Strange.

His second MGM album Lee Hazlewoodism, Its Cause And Cure was released in 1967. Record companies used to call and ask you to do writers albums, as they were called in those days. Frank said, ‘Do you think we could get Nancy to do it? It’s not the kind of movie where the guy playing Tony Rome can do i. In 1968, Nancy & Lee charted with the mesmeric ‘Some Velvet Morning’, one of their most admired duets, which they debuted on the Emmy-winning TV special Movin’ With Nancy. Their subsequent album Nancy & Lee went on to sell a million. Hazlewood was inspired to write the song by the Greek mythology stories he read to his children. I thought they were a lot better than all those fairy tales that came from Germany that had killings and knifings.

It’s Hazlewood at his most maximalist, building a wall of sound to rival Phil Spector’s. Most of the tracks on The Very Special World feature full orchestras passing ideas back and forth in flowery counterpoint, choirs instead of backup singers, and contributions from the in-demand studio musicians known as the Wrecking Crew. Of all the MGM recordings, the songwriting on The Very Special World is by far the most consistent, and features a handful of the most subtle and sensitive songs Hazlewood ever wrote. The irreverent small-combo approach showcased on "After Six" would be the entire focus of Something Special, the one Hazlewood MGM album that sounds like a demo, and the most patently uncommercial of the lot.
